Who is she?
Alessi Laurent-Marke is an 18-year-old Londoner whose forthcoming debut album, Notes from the Treehouse, was produced by Bright Eyes’ Mike Mogis. In advance of that, there is The Horse EP, an intriguing introduction to Alessi’s world. The first thing you notice is how much she plays with her voice: for the most part, it is used as merely another instrument, with no set sound or style. She can, in the space of a song, remind you of Kate Bush, Bjork and Bat for Lashes. That’s not a problem. On the contrary — musically, songs such as Let’s Race and the title track prove just as experimental and wide-ranging, making the EP one of the most promising debuts of the year, with just weeks to spare.
